Health & Wellness Benefits

What are the health benefits of using a wood-fired sauna?

Regular sessions in a wood-fired sauna provide a restorative experience that goes beyond relaxation. The intense dry heat promotes detoxification through sweating, improves circulation, and helps reduce muscle soreness and joint stiffness, making it ideal after a day of outdoor activities. Sauna heat is known to release endorphins which help reduce stress and anxiety, boost your mood, and improve overall mental well-being. The heat may support cardiovascular health by temporarily increasing heart rate and improving blood flow. Additionally, frequent sauna use enhances skin health by opening pores and promoting cellular renewal. Many guests report deeper, more restful sleep following sauna use, aiding in recovery and rejuvenation.

How does sauna complement Colorado's outdoor lifestyle?

In Colorado’s mountainous terrain, active lifestyles often involve hiking, skiing, biking, or exploring. Pairing these adventures with a Norra Dalen sauna session can accelerate muscle recovery, ease tension, and soothe aches from physical exertion. The ritual of alternating hot sauna heat with cooling off (such as taking a cold plunge or enjoying fresh mountain air) invigorates the body and mind, heightening your wellness routine. This Nordic-inspired practice fits naturally into the Colorado outdoor ethos, combining nature immersion with holistic self-care.

Community & Sauna Culture

Why Are Wood-Fired Saunas So Popular Around the World?

Wood-fired saunas are deeply rooted in wellness traditions around the world, especially in countries like Finland, Russia, Japan, and the Baltic nations, where they're seen as essential to daily life, and not just for relaxation. Their popularity comes from the unique combination of natural heat, calming ritual, and connection to nature. The warmth of the wood fire promotes circulation, eases muscle tension, supports detoxification, and helps reduce stress, while the simplicity of the experience encourages presence and reflection. In many cultures, saunas are also social spaces. This blend of physical, mental, and social benefits is what makes wood-fired saunas such a cherished tradition across the globe.

How does Norra Dalen reflect traditional sauna culture?

Norra Dalen draws inspiration from Nordic sauna tradition, particularly the Finnish approach, blending it with the rugged beauty of Colorado. By placing saunas in natural mountain settings and emphasizing the hot-cold wellness cycle, we invite guests to connect with the landscape, with each other, and with a tradition rooted in simplicity, slowness, and presence. We believe that sauna is more than heat. It’s a space to rest, reflect, and reconnect. We carry that belief into every rental, every community event, and every add-on meant to enhance your experience.

Operation & Rental Details

What is the cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel within two weeks of your booking, there’s a 25% cancellation fee, but you may re-schedule free of charge. Cancellations made within one week of your booking are non-refundable.

How hot does the sauna get?

The sauna should be between 170 and 200 degrees. Add wood as necessary to reach and maintain the desired sauna temperature. Once the desired temperature is reached, open one or both round vents on the back wall to provide good airflow, which is one of the essential elements of a great sauna. About 10-12 pieces of wood will provide enough fuel for heat and a great sauna session.

How does sauna delivery and pickup work?

We deliver and set up your mobile sauna safely at the location of your choice. Drop-off is typically at 1pm, and pickup is at 10am the following morning, though we do our best to accommodate special requests. If you’re in a remote area or not easily accessible, a delivery fee may apply. Our team will position the sauna for the best experience and review important site considerations with you.

What comes with my sauna rental?

Each sauna rental package includes delivery and set-up at your chosen site, a bundle of seasoned firewood, a water bucket and ladle,  essential oils to create an authentic sauna atmosphere, lounge chairs, and a cold plunge tub (water and ice not included). Add-ons like concierge service (we preheat the sauna for you) are also available.

How many people fit in the sauna?

The sauna comfortably fits 4–6 adults, with two levels of seating and two movable benches in the hot room. If your group is close-knit, you may be able to squeeze in a couple more. For gatherings, keep in mind that a typical sauna round lasts 10–15 minutes, so larger groups can rotate between heating up and cooling down, allowing everyone to enjoy the experience.

What should I bring?

For comfort, safety, and hygiene, we require all guests to wear a swimsuit and sit on a towel while using the sauna. We also recommend a water bottle to rehydrate and sturdy footwear for outside the sauna. Many guests also enjoy bringing snacks and non-alcoholic beverages to stay refreshed. Remember to hydrate well before and during your session.

How should I prepare for my sauna session?

Hydrate well during the day prior to your sauna session and rinse off before entering the sauna. For comfort, safety, and hygiene, we require all guests to wear a swimsuit and sit on a towel while using the sauna, and advise to take off any jewelry, watches, or eyeglasses, as these will get hot in the sauna. Wear loose, breathable clothing to and from the sauna and bring two towels (one for sitting inside, one for drying off outside). Always use your sauna with at least one other adult present, take breaks to cool off and rehydrate, and limit your time in the heat to what feels comfortable, typically 5–15 minutes per round, with cooling-off periods in between.

How do I light the wood-fired sauna? Do you provide instructions?

Every rental includes detailed instructions for how to light and maintain the wood stove, adjust air flow, and use the sauna safely. We walk you through everything upon delivery and provide printed and digital guides so you feel fully comfortable.

You can also watch the video below for a step-by-step guide on how to use the stove.

Safety

Participant Guidelines

  • Each participant must sign the provided liability waiver. (link to that here).
  • Pregnant women and persons suffering from heart disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, circulatory or respiratory problems, seizures or epilepsy, or any other illness, should not enter the sauna without prior medical consultation.
  • Do not wear watches or any jewelry inside the sauna.
  • Do not drink alcohol or use narcotics, legal or otherwise, prior to or during the sauna session.
  • Do not bring food or drink into the sauna, not even water. If you need some water, leave the
    sauna.
  • Wear swimsuits and sit on a towel while in the sauna.
  • Children are welcome in the sauna, but as they are smaller and don’t regulate heat as well, their sauna rounds should be much shorter in duration and they should sit on the lower benches, away from the stove. Children must be accompanied by an adult while taking a sauna.
  • Sauna is not a competition. If you feel dizzy, light-headed, headaches, or any other discomfort, leave the sauna immediately, hydrate, and cool down. 5-15 minute sauna rounds are plenty to get maximum benefit and enjoyment.

Fire and Stove Safety

  • This is a wood burning stove. It gets HOT! Don’t touch the stove or the rocks as they are heating up or at sauna temperatures. Even the stove door and damper handles will get hot to the touch as the sauna heats up. Use the provided glove to protect your hand when opening the stove door to add wood.
  • Follow the provided stove lighting instructions.
  • There is a Fire Extinguisher in the transition room.
  • When ladling water on the rocks, pour from the back of the stove and work forward to avoid steam burns.
  • Allow the ashes to cool overnight and place the ashes from the ash pit into the provided covered pail.
